I have another apple still life, which seems to have gone awry somehow. I kept this one dialed back on the bombastic elements. I set out, beginning with the photograph, arranging objects, photographing and changing things, and so on. Then when I found one I wanted to work with, I started to work on some digital manipulation of one of them. I always have an empty ceramic cup, a living or once-living thing, and something that threatens the living thing in my still life paintings.
Photographic distortion is most reminiscent to me of what most people are trying to do with the act of painting, turning oneself into a camera. So, where photographic and "printing" distortions occur, I try to create more of them. It's enough abstraction to remove the egoic attachments to "things."
